LOS ANGELES, March 1 (UPI) -- J.K. Simmons said he is open to reprising his role as disgruntled newspaper editor-in-chief J. Jonah Jameson in Marvel and Sony's upcoming Spider-Man reboot, in response to a change.org petition asking for his return.

"Being in those movies with Sam [Raimi] was one of the great joys of my career," the actor explained to Entertainment Tonight while attending the Film Independent Spirit Awards recently.

"It was a super fun character so I'll never close the door on anything," he continued.

Fans have petitioned for his return as Jameson in the upcoming Spider-Man film starring newcomer Tom Holland, which is currently in production and scheduled to hit theaters on July 7, 2017.

Simmons, however, was quick to point out beforehand that a fan-petition does not guarantee something will happen. "That petition does not come from anybody that is actually in a position to do anything about it," Simmons said.

Simmons portrayed the fan-favorite Jameson in the original Spider-Man trilogy alongside Tobey Maguire as the famous web slinger. After Andrew Garfield took over the role for two films in the Amazing Spider-Man series, Marvel and Sony decided to reboot the franchise once again when they cast Holland in the iconic role.

Simmons has also provided the voice for Jameson in Disney XD and Marvel Animations current Ultimate Spider-Man animated series.
