LOS ANGELES, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Bastille Day released a first trailer starring Idris Elba on Tuesday.

The 43-year-old British actor plays Sean Briar, a former C.I.A. agent who teams up with a professional pickpocket (Sebastian Stan) to stop a terrorist plot in Paris.

Richard Madden, Charlotte Le Bon, Eriq Ebouaney and Jose Garcia co-star, with The Woman in Black helmer James Watkins as director. The movie opens in U.K. theaters Apr. 22.

Many commented on how Elba's action-packed role makes a case for him playing James Bond. The actor was first rumored to replace Daniel Craig as 007 in 2014, and recently told Stuff he's tired of the speculation.

"It feels like I'm campaigning [when I talk about it], and I'm not," Elba insisted. "At first it was harmless -- 'Oh, I know, wouldn't it be great?' -- and now it's started off racial debates. I'm probably the most famous Bond actor in the world, and I've not even played the role."

Former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan voiced his support for Elba and a black 007 in August, but James Bond author Anthony Horowitz later called Elba "too street" for the role. Elba himself dismissed the rumors in the September issue of Maxim.

Elba is known for playing Det. John Luther on BBC series Luther and Heimdall in the Marvel cinematic universe. Stan plays Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier, in Marvel films, and is also known for Gossip Girl and Once Upon a Time.
