McG is expected to first oversee another draft of the long in development film before signing on to direct, The Hollywood Reporter reported.

The last script was written by the team of Alex Litvak and Mike Finch.

Based on the popular 1980s animated series of the same name, Masters of the Universe follows Prince Adam, who transforms into the heroic He-Man in order to protect the magical land of Eternia from the evil Skeletor. The franchise is also notable for Mattel's signature toy line based on the property.

The original film released in 1987, starring Dolph Lungdren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor, failed to match the success of the cartoon and was panned by critics.
