LOS ANGELES, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- The Revenant led the field with 12 nods -- including Best Picture, Best Director for Alejandro G. Inarritu and Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio -- when Oscar nominations were revealed Thursday.
The film won those three same honors at Sunday's Golden Globe Awards.
The contenders for the 2016 Oscars were announced by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, director Guillermo del Toro, actor John Krasinski and filmmaker Ang Lee at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
The winners will be crowned during a live telecast, set to air Feb. 28 on ABC. Chris Rock will serve as host of the glitzy gala.
Although some of their movies will be well-represented at the event, high-profile artists such Ridley Scott, Will Smith, Aaron Sorkin, Michael Keaton, Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino were not nominated for individual prizes. The nominees in the top categories are:
