'Bridge of Spies,' 'Carol,' 'Revenant' and 'Mad Max' lead BAFTA nods

LONDON, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Bridge of Spies and Carol led the field with nine nods apiece when nominations for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards for excellence in cinema were announced Friday.

Revenant followed close behind with eight mentions, while Mad Max: Fury Road garnered seven, and Brooklyn and The Martian earned six.

The Big Short, The Danish Girl and Ex Machina received five nominations, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens got four.

The British Academy Film Awards will be presented Feb. 14 at the Royal Opera House in London. Stephen Fry is to host the event, which will be broadcast on the BBC. The nominees are --
