LOS ANGELES, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- X-Men: Apocalypse released an epic first trailer on Friday.
Jennifer Lawrence returns as Mystique, with James McAvoy as Professor X, Nicholas Hoult as Beast and Evan Peters as Quicksilver. Michael Fassbender also returns as Magneto, with newcomer Oscar Isaac as the villain Apocalypse.
Several other newcomers are shown, including Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Olivia Munn as Psylocke, Alexandra Shipp as Storm and Ben Hardy as Angel. Lana Condor is briefly seen as Jubilee, with Tye Sheridan as Cyclops.
The preview sees Professor X, Mystique and others unite against Apocalypse, an ancient being believed to be the first mutant. The villain fights back with a new team of Four Horsemen: Magneto, Psylocke, Storm and Angel.
X-Men: Apocalypse is directed by Bryan Singer, who directed the original X-Men (2000) and X2 (2003). Singer rejoined the series with the seventh film, X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014).
X-Men: Apocalypse takes place in 1983, a decade after Days of Future Past, and is the second film in the series to not feature Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.
"It's a chaotic world of conflict and war and destruction," Singer said in the July 24 issue of Entertainment Weekly. "It's one giant civilization that now requires one giant culling. That's why [Apocalypse] needs special assistants in this process."
X-Men: Apocalypse opens in theaters May 27, 2016.
