'Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials' tops the North American box office

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is the No. 1 movie in North America, earning $30.3 million in receipts this weekend, Box Office Mojo announced Sunday.

Directed by Wes Ball, the sequel to 2014's The Maze Runner stars Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Giancarlo Esposito, Aidan Gillen and Patricia Clarkson. The movies are based on popular young-adult novels by James Dashner.

Coming in at No. 2 at the U.S. and Canadian box office is Black Mass with $23.4 million, followed by The Visit at No. 3 with $11.4 million, The Perfect Guy at No. 4 with $9.6 million and Everest at No. 5 with $7.6 million.

Rounding out the top tier are War Room at No. 6 with $6.3 million, A Walk in the Woods at No. 7 with $2.7 million, Mission: Impossible -- Rogue Nation at No. 8 with $2.3 million, Straight Outta Compton at No. 9 with $2 million and Captive at No. 10 with $1.4 million.
