BROOKLINE, Mass., Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Johnny Depp and wife Amber Heard attended a special Black Mass screening in Whitey Bulger's home state of Massachusetts on Tuesday.

The 52-year-old actor and 29-year-old actress turned heads on the red carpet at the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, Mass. Depp portrays the infamous Boston gangster in the new biopic, which will open in theaters Sept. 18.

Depp and Heard continued to look the happy couple amid speculation about their relationship being on the rocks. The pair was seen together for the first time in five months at the Venice International Film Festival premiere of Black Mass on Sept. 4.

The film follows Bulger's brutal rise to power in the 1970s before he became an FBI informant for 30 years. Joel Edgerton co-stars as FBI agent John Connolly, with Benedict Cumberbatch as Bulger's brother, Massachusets Sen. William "Billy" Bulger, and Dakota Johnson as Bulger's girlfriend, Lindsey Cyr.

"I just don't believe that [an evil person] exists," Depp controversially told reporters at the screening. "I think that people have their humanity. There's a kind heart in [Bulger]. There's a cold heart in there. There's a man who loves. There's a man who cries. There's a lot to the man."
