LOS ANGELES, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- A photo is out giving the first look at Michael Fassbender in costume for the upcoming video game adaptation of Assassin's Creed.

Based on the top-selling Ubisoft game of the same name, Assassin's Creed will start filming Monday for a Dec. 21, 2016, release date.

With the photo comes the news that Fassbender will be portraying Callum Lynch, an original character created specifically for the film. This cinematic version of Assassin's Creed will not be directly adapting any of the existing storylines from the video games.

The film's synopsis provided by Yahoo states that "Lynch discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society through unlocked genetic memories that allow him to relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th-century Spain. After gaining incredible knowledge and skills, he's poised to take on the oppressive Knight Templar in the present day."

In February, it was announced that Marion Cotillard would be joining the cast, reuniting with co-star Fassbender and director Justin Kurzel from the most recent film adaptation of Macbeth, out in theaters this December. Assassin's Creed also stars Michael Keith Williams and Ariane Labed.
