LOS ANGELES, July 17 (UPI) -- Leonardo DiCaprio stars in a dramatic first The Revenant teaser trailer.

The 40-year-old actor portrays Hugh Glass, a fur-trapper robbed left for dead by his companions. The preview sees the character seek out the men (Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson and Will Poulter) who betrayed him against the backdrop of the 19th century frontier.

The Revenant is based on the Michael Punke novel of the same name, and directed by Birdman helmer Alejandro G. Inarritu. DiCaprio's character is inspired by real-life frontiersman Hugh Glass, who was abandoned in the wilderness after a bear attack.

The film was shot entirely in natural light, and opens in theaters Dec. 25. DiCaprio and Hardy previously collaborated on Christopher Nolan movie Inception, and Hardy is also slated to take on a duel role in crime thriller Legend.
