Tom Hiddleston talks complexity, 'kink' in 'Crimson Peak'

HOLLYWOOD, May 15 (UPI) -- Tom Hiddleston's role in Crimson Peak may show a side of him not many of his tens of thousands of fans have seen.

In the wake of the recently released trailer for the spooky flick starring Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland), Jessica Chastain (Interstellar) and Alan McMichael (Pacific Rim), Hiddleston reveals that his role as the mysterious Sir Thomas Sharpe gets "really kinky."

In an interview with Yahoo! Movies, Hiddleston dished out details about the intricate relationships between the four central characters. He calls his own persona the "anti-hero" that is certainly "the most morally ambiguous or complex figure in the story."

Sir Thomas Sharpe is a wealthy Englishman who moves to Boston, Mass., with his sister, Lucille (Chastain) to gather investors for a new machine. Sharpe soon meets and falls in love with a rebellious, sometimes stubborn young woman, Edith (Wasikowska), who he then marries.

All seems ceremoniously romantic until the great Sharpe Mansion reveals its dark secrets to Edith, who becomes trapped within its walls by supernatural forces, Lucille and even Sharpe himself.

"I think [Sharpe is] genuinely caught in between people and in between conflicting emotions," Hiddleston said. "[He is] trying to find the best route through a very, very difficult tangle of what people need from him and want from him and his responsibilities to those people."

"I think the fascinating thing is that everybody has demons, and sometimes you don't know what your demons are until it's too late."

Director Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labrinth, Pacific Rim) told Yahoo! in March that Crimson Peak appeals to the "Victorian nut about gothic romance" in him. Hiddleston himself says the story's dark themes are "after the manner of the great gothic romance novels."

Crimson Peak will hit theaters Oct. 16.
