Nina Simone documentary releases first trailer

LOS ANGELES, April 30 (UPI) -- Nina Simone documentary What Happened, Miss Simone? released a first trailer Wednesday.

The film is directed by Liz Garbus, and will premiere on Netflix and in select theaters June 26.

What Happened, Miss Simone? features archival footage of the famed singer-songwriter, rare audio recordings and interviews with Simone's daughter, Lisa Simone Kelly. The movie opened the 2015 Sundance Film Festival in January.

"Nina Simone's brilliance would forever change the musical landscape and yet she never fully got her due," Garbus said in a statement. "She struggled against demons from both within and without, and her life was both a reflection of the legacy of racism in America as well as an extraordinary example of the power a righteous voice can bring against even the most wicked historical legacies."

Simone was born in Tryon, N.C., in 1933, and came to fame as a singer in the late 1950s. She released several studio albums in her lifetime, and was known for her stage presence, expressive contralto voice and troubled personal life. She died at age 70 in April 2003.
