Captive is based on the novel Unlikely Angel: The Untold Story Of The Atlanta Hostage Hero by Ashley Smith with Stacy Mattingly and tells the true story of "a single mother struggling with drug addiction [who] is randomly taken hostage in her own apartment by a man on the run from the law for breaking out of jail and murdering the judge assigned to his case."

The picture was directed by Jerry Jameson and sees Mara in the starring role as Smith and Oyelowo as the convict who kidnaps her.

Michael Kenneth Williams, Leonor Varela, Mimi Rogers and Matt Lowe are also part of the cast.
