LONDON, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Eddie Redmayne has joined the cast of new Thomas the Tank Engine film Sodor's Legend of the Lost Treasure.

The 33-year-old actor won an Academy Award for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything this week, and has signed on to the animated project. Redmayne will voice a character named Ryan, who takes over for Thomas after he is transferred.

"I grew up loving to watch Thomas and his pals getting caught up in unexpected and mischievous adventures," he said in a statement. "I jumped at the opportunity to get involved and what fun it was. I have never voiced an animated character before and I had a complete blast."

The film also features John Hurt as Sailor John and Jamie Campbell Bower as the sailing vessel Skiff. The movie will be preceded by The Adventure Begins in the spring, and is scheduled for DVD and VOD release in September. Sources say it will likely have a limited theatrical run as well.

Redmayne is known for such films as The Good Shepherd, Elizabeth: The Golden Age and Les Miserables. The actor last appeared with Mila Kunis in Jupiter Ascending, and is also scheduled for The Danish Girl with Amber Heard.
