'LEGO Movie' filmmakers address Oscar snub at Critics' Choice Awards

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- The LEGO Movie's co-directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord joked about their Oscar snub as they collected their prize for Best Animated Movie at Thursday's Critics' Choice Awards ceremony.

"What a roller coaster of emotions today has been," Miller confessed.

"Yeah, crazy day!" Lord agreed.

"This award is just extra special today," added producer Dan Lin. "We made our movie to bring joy to people around the world and an award is just gravy. I'm so proud to be standing here with Chris and Phil -- our writer-directors -- and want to thank Warner Bros. and want to thank Animal Logic and want to thank the Lego Group and our partner Roy Lee."

"We also want to thank you guys -- the Critics Choosers -- for having the courage to give an award to something called The LEGO Movie," Lord said.

"This movie is about freedom of expression, so please don't stop making things. Artists should never be silenced by fear. They should only be silenced by the wrapup music, so we're going to get out of here. Thanks, bye," Miller concluded.

Earlier in the day, the blockbuster was notably absent from the list of Oscar nominees for Best Animated Feature, although its infectious tune "Everything is Awesome" did earn a nod for Best Original Song. The films that made the shortlist were Big Hero 6, The Boxtrolls, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Song of the Sea and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya.

Miller and Lord chronicled their emotions regarding the film's ups and downs on social media Thursday.

"Thanks all for the outpouring of love for the LEGO Movie today. We didn't make it for awards, we made it to be a trending topic on Twitter," Miller tweeted in between the Oscar snub and Critics' Choice Award win.

Lord, meanwhile, posted a photo of a gold Oscar statuette made out of LEGO bricks with the message: "It's okay. Made my own!"
