The 47-year-old actress portrays Gertrude Bell, a real-life British explorer, archaeologist and cartographer well known for her travels in the Middle East. Bell later used her knowledge to help guide the British army through desert expeditions during World War I.
Franco appears as Henry Cadogan, Viscount Chelsea, a British army officer, civil servant and parliament member. He served as a captain in the 3rd battalion of the Royal Fusiliers, first lord of the treasury to a prime minister and a member of Parliament.
Queen of the Desert is directed by Werner Herzog (Cave of Forgotten Dreams), and will compete at the 2015 Berlin Film Festival in February. Robert Pattinson co-stars as Lawrence of Arabia inspiration T.E. Lawrence and Christopher Fulford as Winston Churchill.
Kidman last appeared in Before I Go to Sleep with Colin Firth, and will provide a voice role in Paddington. She is also scheduled for Strangerland with Hugo Weaving and Joseph Fiennes, and an adaptation of Kevin Wilson novel The Family Fang.
Franco recently starred in controversial comedy The Interview, and will appear in a number of upcoming projects, including thriller True Story with Jonah Hill, I Am Michael with Zachary Quinto and The Adderall Diaries with Amber Heard.
