LOS ANGELES, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Michael Keaton is in talks for Kong: Skull Island.

The 63-year-old actor would star alongside Tom Hiddleston and J.K. Simmons in the King Kong origin film. The story is set on the gorilla's mysterious home island, a primordial place filled with the descendants of prehistoric creatures in King Kong (2005).

Max Borenstein (Godzilla) and John Gatins wrote the script, with Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) as director and Eric McLeod as executive producer. Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Alex Garcia will produce, and the film is scheduled for release in 3-D on March 10, 2017.

Keaton last starred as Riggan Thomson in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu film Birdman. The role earned him critical acclaim and several nominations, including for a Screen Actors Guild award. He will next appear in Spotlight, and has a voice role in Despicable Me spinoff Minions.
