"How do you say October 7, 2016 in Cajun?" Tatum tweeted in the wake of the announcement, in reference to the character's Louisiana heritage.

In the Marvel comics, Remy LeBeau, aka Gambit, is a professional thief introduced to the X-Men by Storm. The character is a mutant with the ability to control kinetic energy, and is also proficient in the martial art of bojutsu.

Tatum will first portray Gambit in X-Men: Apocalypse on May 27, 2016. The film takes place 10 years after X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), and will see Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and the X-Men face off against the ancient villain Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac).

Tatum last appeared as real-life wrestler Mark Schultz in Bennett Miller film Foxcatcher. He is scheduled for a number of upcoming projects, including Magic Mike XXL, Quentin Tarantino western The Hateful Eight and Coen brothers comedy Hail, Caesar!.
