Natalie Portman stars in first photos from 'Jane Got a Gun'

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Natalie Portman stars in the first photos from Jane Got a Gun.

The 33-year-old actress portrays Jane Hammond, a frontier woman whose husband, Bill "Ham" Hammond (Noah Emmerich) has a run-in with John Bishop (Ewan McGregor) and his Bishop Boys. The character turns to her former fiancé, Dan Frost (Joel Edgerton), for help when the gang comes seeking revenge.

Jane Got a Gun was originally scheduled for release in August 2014, but languished for months in post-production. Warrior director Gavin O'Connor helmed the film, with Portman as producer. The western will open in theaters September 4.

Portman last appeared as Jane Foster in Thor: The Dark World in 2013. She will star in a number of upcoming projects, including Terrence Malick film Knight of Cups with Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett and A Tale of Love and Darkness.
