Tom Hardy stars in first trailer for 'Mad Max: Fury Road'

The actor portrays Max Rockantansky, a role originated by Mel Gibson in "Mad Max."

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Tom Hardy stars in an epic first trailer for Mad Max: Fury Road.

The 37-year-old actor portrays Max Rockatansky, with Charlize Theron as the fugitive imperator Furiosa. The preview establishes the post-apocalyptic Australian setting, and sees the duo contend with villain Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne) in the wastelands.

George Miller directed Mel Gibson in the original Mad Max (1979), Mad Max 2 (1981) and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985), and returned to helm Mad Max: Fury Road. The film is a continuation of Mad Max, and a prequel to Mad Max 2.

Mad Max: Fury Road opens in theaters May 15, 2015. Nicholas Hoult also stars as the raider Nux, with Nathan Jones as Rictus Erectus, Zoe Kravitz as Toast, Riley Keough as Capable and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley as Splendid.

Tom Hardy last appeared in The Drop with late actor James Gandolfini, and currently stars as Alfie Solomons on BBC Two series Peaky Blinders. He is scheduled for a number of projects, including The Revenant with Leonardo DiCaprio and DC Comics film Suicide Squad.
