CULVER CITY, Calif., Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Sony Pictures emails reveal Marvel wanted Spider-Man to appear in Captain America: Civil War.

The information was leaked this week as hackers continue to publish the company's private documents. In one said email, Sony motion picture chief Amy Pascal told a business partner Marvel requested rights to include the superhero in the sequel.

Although Spider-Man is a Marvel character, as is Captain America, Sony holds the long-term license and creative control. In another email, Sony Pictures president Doug Belgrad suggested the company may oversee Marvel producing a new trilogy of Spider-Man movies.

Spider-Man plays a pivotal role in the Civil War comic series, but talks for Captain America 3 broke down. Sources told the Wall Street Journal Sony will pursue other plans, such as an animated Spider-Man comedy produced by 22 Jump Street's Chris Miller and Phil Lord.

Sony Pictures previously released Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man 3 (2007) with Tobey Maguire, and rebooted the series with Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014).

The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was originally to be released in 2016, but was pushed back to 2018 after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 failed to perform as expected. Captain America: Civil War is scheduled to open in theaters May 6, 2016.
