NEW YORK, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Robert Downey Jr. has confirmed there will be no Iron Man 4.

The 49-year-old actor originally announced the news in September, but recently teased he'd be open to the film if Mel Gibson were director. Downey reiterated he will not return for a sequel Tuesday on The Late Show, but told host David Letterman he and Marvel have a plan.

"There's no plans for an Iron Man 4," he asserted. "[It's a] valid question [why not]. Like, it hasn't made enough money or something? Yeah, I guess they have too much money, or something."

"There's no script for Iron Man 4," he continued. "They do have a plan and I think [Marvel's] gonna announce it. You know, they're very secretive about it... There will be other stuff... just between us, no [more Iron Man]. But I'm gonna do other stuff with Marvel. I'm still going to be involved with Marvel and there's gonna be plenty of fun stuff to happen."

Downey has starred as Iron Man in three solo movies and ensemble film The Avengers, and is under contract for Avengers: Age of Ultron and a third Avengers movie. The actor will next appear alongside Robert Duvall in The Judge on Oct. 10.
