LOS ANGELES, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Duck Dynasty star Willie Robertson served as an executive producer on Nicolas Cage's upcoming faith-based action-thriller Left Behind.

"I am so excited to be a part of the brand new feature film Left Behind," Robertson said in a statement Friday. "As I continue my journey into the major motion picture business, I am proud to be associated with this project, which is based off of the best-selling novel that really brings the book series to life. It's a film that audiences need to see to believe -- are you ready?"

Producer and screenwriter Paul Lalonde said he is "thrilled that Willie Robertson is part of our team and that he shares the same vision for Left Behind and its message that will be brought to moviegoers around the world."

"Willie and I are both on the same page, not only theologically, but also in our commitment to high quality entertainment that reaches a wide audience. Working with him has been inspiring," Lalonde added.

Directed by Vic Armstrong, the film follows Cage's character Rayford Steele, who is piloting a commercial airliner during the Rapture when millions of people around the globe vanish. The movie is based on a series of novels by Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim LaHaye.

The role of Steele was previously played by Brad Johnson in a trilogy of Left Behind movies released in 2000, 2002 and 2005. The original big-screen adaptations of the books also co-starred former teen idol Kirk Cameron, who is now a Christian evangelist, as well as an actor.

Co-starring Cassi Thomson, Chad Michael Murray, Nicky Whelan, Lea Thompson and Jordin Sparks, the film is set for theatrical release Oct. 3.
