Eddie Redmayne makes Stephen Hawking walk in trailer for 'The Theory of Everything'

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- To most of the world, famed theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking is known one of two ways -- that guy with the robot voice who sometimes appears on The Simpsons and in other media, or the greatest living mind on the planet whose research into black holes and space-time have changed life on Earth.

Much like Hawking himself, Focus Features' new biopic The Theory of Everything takes a look back in time. Not to the Big Bang and the beginning of all that's ever existed, but to the mid-20th century and Hawking's first marriage and early battle with ALS.

The trailer shows a young Hawking, played by Eddie Redmayne, studying at the University of Oxford where he meets first wife, Jane Wilde, falls in love and receives his crippling diagnosis. Early clips appear to focus on Hawking's relationship with Wilde, and how he manages ALS and losing his voice.

The script is based on the book Traveling Infinity written by Wilde, which details her tumultuous marriage to Hawking that eventually ended in 1995.

"I had two tiny babies, I was running the home and looking after Stephen full time: dressing, bathing, and he refused to have any help with that other than from me," Wilde told the Guardian in 2004 interview when the book was first published.

"One of the great battles was getting Stephen to use a wheelchair. I'd be going out with Stephen on one arm, carrying the baby in the other, and the toddler running alongside. Well it was hopeless because the toddler would run off and I would be unable to chase. So that kind of thing made life rather impossible."

The Theory of Everything will be released in the United States on Nov. 7.
