LOS ANGELES, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz star in the first stills from Tim Burton's Big Eyes.

The 39-year-old actress and 57-year-old actor portray Margaret and Walter Keane, a real-life former couple who caused a scandal in the world of art. Walter came to fame in the 1950s and '60s for his paintings of children with abnormally large eyes, but it was revealed during their divorce that Margaret had actually painted the works.

Big Eyes tells the story of the Keanes' heated divorce battle, during which Margaret challenged Walter to a paint-off to prove she was the true artist. The film is Burton's first since Frankenweenie (2012), and co-stars Krysten Ritter as DeAnn, Danny Huston as reporter Dick Nolan, Terence Stamp as art critic John Canaday, Jason Schwartzman as Ruben and Jon Polito as impresario Enrico Banducci. The movie opens in theaters December 25.
