'Alice in Wonderland 2' begins production

The sequel will see Alice (Mia Wasikowska) revisit Underland.

SHEPPERTON, England, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass has started production.

The movie is based on Lewis Carroll's 1871 novel Through the Looking Glass, and is a sequel to Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. The adaptation has grossed over $1 billion at the box office since its premiere in 2010.

James Bobin (The Muppets, Muppets Most Wanted) will direct, with Burton, Joe Roth (Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent), and Jennifer and Suzanne Todd (Alice in Wonderland) as producers. Linda Woolverton (Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent) returned to write the screenplay, and Danny Elfman will return to compose the score.

Mia Wasikowska will reprise the role of Alice, with Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen and Anne Hathaway as the White Queen. Rhys Ifans, Matt Lucas, Ed Speleers and Sacha Baron Cohen also star, with voice credits from Michael Sheen, Alan Rickman and Stephen Fry.

Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass is scheduled for release May 27, 2016.
