Michael Keaton plots comeback in new 'Birdman' trailer

The Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu film is a dark comedy based on Raymond Carver's short story collection "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love."

LOS ANGELES, July 31 (UPI) -- Michael Keaton stars in the new, international trailer for Birdman.

The 62-year-old actor portrays Riggan Thompson, a washed-up actor best known for his role as superhero Birdman. Thompson plots to make his comeback in a Broadway play, and must battle his ego as he struggles to recover his family, career and himself.

The film is directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (21 Grams, Babel), and co-stars Edward Norton as Thompson's rival, Emma Stone as Thompson's daughter, Andrea Riseborough as Thompson's girlfriend Laura, Zach Galifianakis as Brandon Van der Hey, Amy Ryan as Griffin Murray, Merritt Weaver as Annie and Naomi Watts in an undisclosed role.

Birdman will open the 71st Venice International Film Festival in August, and is scheduled for release October 17. Keaton is well known for his role as superhero Batman in Tim Burton's Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992), and appeared in RoboCop and Need for Speed this year.
