'Fault in Our Stars' is No. 1 at the U.S. box office, earning $48.2M during its debut weekend

The chart-topping movie stars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort as young lovers, who are battling cancer.

LOS ANGELES, June 9 (UPI) -- The young-adult romance, The Fault in Our Stars, beat all comedies and action pictures at the North American box office this past weekend, raking in $48.2 million, Rentrak announced Sunday.

Coming in at No. 2 was Maleficent with $33.5 million, followed by Edge of Tomorrow at No. 3 with $29.1 million, X-Men: Days of Future Past at No. 4 with $14.7 million and A Million Ways to Die in the West at No. 5 with $7.2 million.

Rounding out the top tier are Godzilla at No. 6 with $6 million, Neighbors at No. 7 with $5.2 million, Blended at No. 8 with $4 million, Chef at No. 9 with $2.6 million and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 at No. 10 with $1.9 million.
