Denzel Washington in talks for 'Magnificent Seven' remake

LOS ANGELES, June 6 (UPI) -- Denzel Washington is in early talks for a Magnificent Seven remake.

The movie would see the 59-year-old actor reunite with 48-year-old director Antoine Fuqua. The two men previously collaborated on Training Day (2001), and have both been offered roles in the upcoming production. Fuqua would be brought on as director, while Washington would star as one of the seven leads.

The original film was directed by John Sturges and released in 1960. The plot is a Western-style interpretation of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, and stars Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter and Horst Buchholz as seven gunmen hired to defend a small village.

Roger Birnbaum (Unbreakable, Wanted) will produce the remake for MGM studios. Washington and Fuqua already have one project in the works -- The Equalizer, set for release September 26.
