LONDON, May 26 (UPI) -- Actress Nicole Kidman said she had no control over the final edit of her latest film, Grace of Monaco, which has been almost universally panned by critics.

It seems as though the royal family of Monaco weren't the only ones who weren't fans the biopic of Princess Grace. Kidman seems to be defending her role in the movie.

"As much as people go, 'Oh, the actor is totally responsible,' the actor doesn't go into the editing room. I wasn't producing the film. I wasn't directing it and I don't have any control over it," she said. "You literally do the performance and then you leave."

The film tells the story of Princess Grace's life after she married Rainier III Prince of Monaco in 1956. Actor Tim Roth plays Rainier.

The royal family issued a statement May 2 denouncing the film.

"The Princely family does not in any way wish to be associated with this film which reflects no reality and regrets that its history has been misappropriated for commercial purposes," the statement said.
