BURBANK, Calif., May 23 (UPI) -- Ninjago, an animated, 3D action-adventure film based on the line of ninja-inspired LEGO toys, is scheduled to hit theaters in 2016, Warner Bros. Pictures said.

Charlie Bean will make his feature directorial debut on the project, which is being produced by Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Lord and Miller wrote and directed the smash hit, The LEGO Movie, and Lin and Lee produced it.

Jill Wilfert, Seth Grahame-Smith, John Powers Middleton, James Packer and Steve Mnuchin are serving as executive producers on Ninjago. The screenplay was written by Bryan Shukoff and Kevin Chesley.

No vocal cast members have been announced yet. The LEGO Movie featured the voices of Morgan Freeman, Liam Neeson, Elizabeth Banks, Chris Pratt and Will Arnett.

"Following the huge success of The LEGO Movie, we are very excited to build on the LEGO franchise," Dan Fellman, WB's president of domestic distribution, said in a statement. "We know there are already Ninjago collectors who can't wait to see their favorite characters on the big screen. This promises to be a terrifically fun and thrilling entry into our fall 2016 slate, with broad audience appeal."

"As proven by the worldwide popularity of The LEGO Movie, we know that the LEGO characters have a global fan base. Ninjago is sure to delight international audiences of all ages with its own blend of action, adventure and humor," added Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, the studio's president of international distribution.
