'Godzilla' destroys weekend box office with $93M

"Godzilla" has $93 million domestic opening weekend and $103 million overseas.

LOS ANGELES, May 18 (UPI) -- Monster flick Godzilla surpassed expectations this weekend, taking home $93 million at the box office and the No. 1 spot.

The film, starring Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston, earned $9.3 million Thursday and $38.5 million on opening day for the second-biggest opening weekend this year.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier opened slightly higher with a $95 million first weekend take.

Godzilla also earned $103 million overseas for a $196 million worldwide take.

Coming in behind Godzilla this weekend were Neighbors with $25.9 million, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 with $16.8 million, Million Dollar Arm with $10.5 million, The Other Woman with $6.3 million, Heaven is For Real with $4.4 million, Rio 2 with $3.8 million, Captain America: The Winter Soldier with $3.8 million, Legends of Oz with $1.9 million and Mom's Night Out with $1.9 million.
