Will Smith says he won't appear in 'Independence Day' sequel

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Hollywood film actor Will Smith has declined to star in the planned sequel to his 1996 blockbuster "Independence Day," Deadline.com reported.

The alien action movie's director Roland Emmerich and co-writer and producer Dean Devlin are working on a follow-up and hope to release it in 2016, the report said.

The entertainment industry news website didn't say why Smith passed on the sequel to one of the biggest hits of his career.

The actor will soon be seen in the big-screen drama "Focus."
