Disney Studios to revive 'Chip 'n' Dale' characters

HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Disney Studios picked up a pitch from director Robert Rugan to revive the cartoon duo Chip 'n' Dale in a live-action feature, The Hollywood Reporter said.

Rugan, an award-winning commercials director, is writing an updated take on the characters -- based on the 1980s series in which the two chipmunks are detectives -- in what is being pitched as a live-action/CG hybrid, the entertainment industry publication reported Friday.

Mandeville Films/Tv, which is also behind the Muppets franchise, will be producing.

Chip 'n' Dale first appeared in 1943 in an animated short starring Pluto. The duo later went on to appear in 22 reels stretching into the mid-1950s.

The characters were revived in 1989 in "Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers" for three seasons. The series ran in syndication on the Disney channel for 10 years.
