NEW YORK, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- U.S. actress Maria Bello explained in a first-person article in The New York Times how she told her 12-year-old son about her lesbian partner.

The 46-year-old Bello, whose most recent film is "Prisoners," said she told the boy, Jackson, there was a lot of "adult stuff" she hadn't told him and when he asked her what she eventually confided she was "involved with a woman who was my best friend and, as it happens, a person who is like a godmother to my son." The woman was identified only as "Clare."

"He looked at me for what seemed like an eternity and then broke into a huge, warm smile. 'Mom, love is love, whatever you are,' he said with wisdom beyond his years," she wrote.

Bello said she also told her parents with trepidation, keeping mind she came from a "traditional" Italian-Polish Philadelphia family.

"My father's response came between puffs of his cigar while we sat on the roof of a casino in Atlantic City. 'She's a good girl, good for you,' he said," she wrote. "My mother and family echoed his sentiments. Maybe they weren't so traditional after all."
