Summer 2013 sets new movie box-office record

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- The North American summer box-office receipts for movies set a record of $4.75 billion, Variety reported Wednesday.

The earnings are nearly 8 percent higher than 2011's $4.4 billion summer benchmark, the entertainment industry trade newspaper said.

2013 summer admissions, which are estimated at approximately 567 million, were the highest in four years, but did not set a new record, the report said.

Summer 2013 blockbusters included "Iron Man 3," "Man of Steel," "Now You See Me," "World War Z," "Star Trek Into the Darkness," "Lee Daniels' The Butler," "Planes," "The Conjuring" and "We're the Millers."
