VENICE, Italy, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Police and security guards protected actor Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter fans rushed him at the Venice Film Festival in Italy.

Radcliffe, 24, said he has gotten used to crowd attention, E! Online reported. He spoke to the news media Sunday after the incident on the red carpet while the windows shook because of crowds gathered outside the building.

"Thankfully, it's not always like this," he said. "I've been dealing with it in various ways since I was 11. I don't take it seriously, actually I think it's funny."

Radcliffe was in Venice for the premiere of "Kill Your Darlings." He plays New Jersey-born poet Allen Ginsberg in the movie about the Beat Generation.

The movie is a departure from Radcliffe's eight-film run as Harry Potter, which took him from child to adult.

"I'm incredibly grateful for the swirl of support behind me," Radcliffe said. "My fans seem to be excited by the unconventional path I am taking."
