NEW YORK, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Performances of all Broadway shows for Sunday and Monday were canceled in anticipation of the arrival of Hurricane Sandy, producers said.

"The safety and security of theater-goers and employees is everyone's primary concern," Charlotte St. Martin, executive director of The Broadway League, said in a statement Sunday.

"As a result of the suspension of public transportation by government authorities in preparation for Hurricane Sandy, evening performances will be canceled tonight, Sunday, Oct. 28, and Monday evening, Oct. 29."

The Hollywood Reporter said many of New York's movie theaters were also shutting their doors through Tuesday.

The storm is expected to hit the mid-Atlantic Monday or early Tuesday.
