HOLLYWOOD, July 29 (UPI) -- Film studio Warner Bros. could be exploring the possibility of a prequel to horror hit "The Shining," the Los Angeles Times reported.

A person familiar with the project, whose name was not reported, told the Times the studio has solicited the help of writer-producer Laeta Kalogridis and her partners Bradley Fischer and James Vanderbilt to create the prequel.

The film would focus on what happened at Overlook Hotel before the Torrance family arrived at the haunted retreat, the newspaper reported.

A Warner Bros., spokeswoman said any work on a "Shining" prequel would be in the very early stages and not formally in development.

Kalogridis previously wrote the script for Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island" and was an executive producer on James Cameron's "Avatar," the Times reported.

"The Shining" author Stephen King is currently writing a sequel to the horror novel.
