LOS ANGELES, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- The romantic drama "The Vow" led a record-breaking non-holiday weekend at the box office, posting the biggest opening of the year, figures show.
It was one of four films that opened with more that $20 million in receipts.
The action thriller "Safe House" opened with a strong $39.3 million, the sequel "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" took in $27.6 million while a 3-D re-release of "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace" rang up a respectable $23 million.
The healthy ticket sales push the weekend's take up 30 percent compared to the same period in 2011, the Times said.
"The Vow," about a woman who suffers amnesia in a car crash and must try to fall in love with her husband, appealed mostly to women, drawing an overwhelming 72 percent female audience.
