LOS ANGELES, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- The Hollywood version of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" will be released in U.S. theaters a day earlier than planned, Sony Pictures announced Tuesday.

Directed by David Fincher and starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara, the movie will open at 7 p.m. Dec. 20 instead of Dec. 21 as planned, The Hollywood Reporter said.

"This is one of the busiest times of the year for movie-going and we can't wait to share this outstanding thriller with audiences all over the world. We feel that by opening for nighttime shows on Dec. 20, fans of the book will be given the perfect opportunity to get a jump start on the release of the exceptional film," Jeff Blake, Sony's chairman of worldwide marketing and distribution, said in a statement issued to the entertainment industry trade newspaper.

"Girl" is a remake of a 2008 Swedish film by the same name. The movies are based on the blockbuster novel by the late Stieg Larsson.
