TORONTO, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Lebanese filmmaker Nadine Labaki won the top prize at the Toronto International Film Festival Sunday for her drama "Where Do We Go Now?"
Labaki's film is about Muslim and Christian women in a Lebanese village who conspire to prevent their men from going to war.
Besides winning the Cadillac People's Choice Award, Labaki, who also stars in the movie, won a cash prize of $15,000. It also will vie for Best Foreign Film at next year's Oscars.
Organizers said Labaki messaged from the Frankfurt, Germany, airport that she was "very happy and ecstatic," to the point she was jumping up and down, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
Other winners at the 11-day festival that wrapped up Sunday included Quebec director Philippe Falardeau, whose "Monsieur Lazhar" was named Best Canadian Feature; Nathan Morlando's "Edwin Boyd," Best Canadian First Feature Film; Ian Harnarine's "Doubles with Slight Pepper," Best Canadian Short Film; Jon Shenk's "The Island President," Cadillac People's Choice Documentary; Gareth Evans' "The Raid," Midnight Madness Audience Award; Axel Petersen's "Avalon," International Critics Prize; and Gianni Amelio's "The First Man," International Critic Prize, Special Presentation.
