LOS ANGELES, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- U.S. filmmakers Andy and Lana Wachowski are set to begin shooting "Cloud Atlas," a big-screen adaptation of David Mitchell's book, Warner Bros. said.

The Wachowskis are best known for their work on the "Matrix" trilogy, as well as "Speed Racer."

Producers Grant Hill and Stefan Arndt said the brother and sister team is to start filming the independently financed "Cloud Atlas" Friday. Warner Bros. is on board to distribute the movie.

The movie's cast includes Halle Berry, Tom Hanks, Hugh Grant, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess and Susan Sarandon.

A synopsis described the film as "an epic story of humankind in which the actions and consequences of our lives impact one another throughout the past, present and future as one soul is shaped from a murderer into a savior and a single act of kindness ripples out for centuries to inspire a revolution."

The Wachowskis co-wrote the film with Tom Tykwer, the director/writer of "Perfume" and "Run Lola Run."
