John Gray to direct 'Hanging Tree' film

NEW YORK, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- New York filmmaker John Gray says he plans to adapt author Bryan Gruley's mystery thriller "The Hanging Tree" for the big screen.

Gray wrote and directed last spring's festival hit "White Irish Drinkers" and created the TV series "The Ghost Whisperer."

He said he acquired the film rights for "Tree" through his company, Ovington Avenue Productions, and will pen the screenplay for and direct the film, as well as produce it with his producing partner Melissa Jo Peltier.

"The Hanging Tree" is the second book in the best-selling Starvation Lake mystery series.

"Bryan Gruley has written a brilliant series of novels, with rich characters in an incredibly visual and fascinating world. The themes in this particular novel resonated deeply with me, and I'm passionate about bringing it to the screen," Gray said in a statement Tuesday.
