'Lion King' to be re-released in 3-D

BURBANK, Calif., May 26 (UPI) -- "The Lion King" is set for a U.S. theatrical re-release in 3-D for two weeks in September, The Walt Disney Studios said Thursday.

The limited-engagement, to begin Sept. 16, will be the first time the Oscar- and Golden Globe-winning animated musical film appears on the big screen in Disney Digital 3-D. It is to be released Oct. 4 on high-definition Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3-D.

"'The Lion King' is the best-selling home entertainment release of all time -- and this is 'The Lion King' like never before," Bob Chapek, president of distribution for The Walt Disney Studios, said in a statement.

With music by Elton John, Tim Rice and Hans Zimmer, the 1994 movie featured the voice talents of Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane, Whoopi Goldberg, James Earl Jones and Jeremy Irons.
