LOS ANGELES, April 13 (UPI) -- The Coalition Against Trafficking in Women says a public-service campaign featuring a group of Hollywood celebrities dumbs down important issues.
Created by married film stars Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore's Demi and Ashton Foundation, the "Real Men Don't Buy Girls" public-service announcements are intended to raise awareness about the sexual exploitation and slavery of minors, FOX News said on its Web site Wednesday.
The campaign features Sean Penn, Jessica Biel, Jamie Foxx, Eva Longoria, Bradley Cooper and Justin Timberlake saying things like "real men know how to use an iron" and "real men know how to make a meal" as a means of delivering the message of how "real men" also don't exploit or enslave girls.
FOX News said the stars's well-meaning efforts have met with some criticism, however, for making light of a very serious situation.
"This is what happens when celebrities do an issue divorced from the movement. Once you chose an issue and don't do it in collaboration with people who have been doing this for a long time, this is what you end up with," Norma Ramos, Executive Director of the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women, told FOX411.com. "There is a general dumbing down that is going on and this is an example of dumbing down a social justice movement with the narrowest message possible."
