LOS ANGELES, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- The director of "The Hangover 2" says Hollywood actor-director Mel Gibson won't pop up in his sequel to the comedy blockbuster as planned.

"I thought Mel would have been great in the movie," People.com quoted Todd Phillips as saying Thursday. "But I realize filmmaking is a collaborative effort, and this decision ultimately did not have the full support of my entire cast and crew."

People.com said Phillips didn't disclose who objected to Gibson being in the movie.

The "Lethal Weapon" and "Braveheart" star has gotten more attention in recent years for his personal life than for his career.

In 2006 Gibson infamously made anti-Semitic remarks to a police officer while being arrested for driving under the influence. He later apologized for his behavior. Last year he announced he and his wife were splitting up after nearly 30 years of marriage. He then had a baby daughter with Oksana Grigorieva, a now-former girlfriend who has since accused him of domestic violence.
