LOS ANGELES, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- U.S. author Judy Blume says she has written a screenplay with her son Lawrence Blume, based on her popular 1981 young-adult novel, "Tiger Eyes."

The younger Blume is to direct the picture about a teen-age girl trying to start a new life with her mother and brother in New Mexico after her father's murder in New Jersey. The Hollywood Reporter said "Gossip Girl" actress Willa Holland is to play the female lead, Davey.

"Tiger Eyes" will be the first Judy Blume novel to be adapted for the big screen.

"I will swear to you, when I wrote this book, I didn't know it would have anything to do with my father's death. I can't even talk about it without choking up," Blume told the entertainment industry trade newspaper. "When I was very young, my dad died suddenly. I was with him. You never get over that. It's always there, it's a big part of your life. It's a big hole."
