TAOS, N.M., June 2 (UPI) -- Actors Jack Nicholson, Dean Stockwell and Val Kilmer were among the mourners at movie actor-director Dennis Hopper's funeral Wednesday in Taos, N.M.

Hopper died of prostate cancer last Saturday at the age of 74. He is best known for his work in the films "Rebel Without a Cause," "Giant," "True Grit," "Easy Rider," "Apocalypse Now" and "Speed." He most recently starred in the TV drama "Crash."

USA Today reported Taos was chosen for the setting of the actor's funeral because it was a town Hopper had always loved and in which he lived while he wrote, shot and edited his cinematic classic "Easy Rider," which also featured Nicholson.

Nicholson, Stockwell and Kilmer were among the dozens of mourners who turned out for the service at San Francisco de Asis church and private burial, which took place afterward, E! News reported, adding Hopper's brothers and son, Henry Lee, carried the actor's simple wooden coffin to and from the church.

"It was a very singular relationship I had with him, like nobody else. We were soul mates in a way. I really miss him," Nicholson said.
