LOS ANGELES, March 7 (UPI) -- "Inglourious Basterds" co-star Christoph Waltz won the Oscar for best supporting actor in Los Angeles Sunday night.

"Oscar and Penelope, that's an uber-bingo," the Austrian actor said upon collecting his statuette from presenter Penelope Cruz. "There's no way I can ever thank you enough. But I can start right now -- thank you, thank you."

A short time later "Up" won the Oscar for best animated film.

"Never did I dream that making a flip-book out of my third-grade math book would lead to this," director Pete Docter said. "It's incredible being here."

Journalist Mark Boal won the original screenplay Oscar for "The Hurt Locker."

"Oh, my God. Wow, thank you Academy. You honor me and humble me with this," Boal said.

Geoffrey Fletcher earned the award for best adapted screenplay for "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire," while Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett took home the prize for original song for "The Weary Kind (Theme from Crazy Heart)" from the film "Crazy Heart."

The ceremony also featured a tribute to filmmaker John Hughes, who died of a heart attack last year at age 59. Former child stars and teen idols Molly Ringwald, Matthew Broderick, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Jon Cryer, Macaulay Culkin and Ally Sheedy -- the leads of some of Hughes's most famous films like "Sixteen Candles," "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," "The Breakfast Club," "Pretty in Pink" and "Home Alone" -- appeared on stage together at the Oscars to honor their late collaborator.
